Red playing cards

Jean Puiforcat’s insatiable creativity extended well beyond the arts of the table. His natural curiosity constantly drove him to explore new worlds of design, always starting with graphic representations: letters, posters, monograms, etc. Encouraged by the type designer Peignot, he unveiled a unique deck of cards at the 1937 Exposition Internationale des Arts et des Techniques Appliqués à la Vie Moderne (International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life). The figures adorning the face cards were born from his imagination, and legend has it that Jean Puiforcat’s Mexican wife, Martha Estevez, colored the deck.
